The 2017 Cadillac ELR is getting a massive and very serious refresh. Showing us that they do mean business the latest ELR vehicle was restyled in spectacular fashion and was given some new characteristics to go with its already familiar style. More power to the ELR, a much enjoyable interior technical setup and better handling abilities are nothing compared to a 10k lighter price that the car is being offered for this year.
The previous 2014 model was actually struck down by many issues that it had to its design which lead it to be one of the most criticized cars of the year. This also lead to a downfall in sales and left the car in a bit of a standstill situation. This is why the changes happening here are so important as they are meant to breathe in some much needed life to the ELR brand and hopefully get the sales up a bit.
The 2017 ELR is also going to offer the first usage of an extended range electronic powertrain technology applied to a luxury brand vehicle. However, this premise did not help the ELR in the past as it had many issues with the hard angled design and the futuristic styling that was brought by its initial concept model. Everything did not go as planned and the ELR was regarded as a poorer version of the Chevy Volt with which it shared the powertrains with.
As the 2017 Cadillac ELR now tramples on Tesla Model S territory, which is going to be its main rival in the segment, the issues that befall it seem fixed and solved. But we will still have to see how the market will react once the car is released. This review will help you get the gist of the new car and we also include some of the latest pictures that have been released as well.
2017 Cadillac ELR drivetrain info
The largest fault about the pwoertrain of the previous car was that it was underpowered, but the 2017 Cadillac ELR version has been updated and given higher power. There is a software update that was added to the electric part of the engine which saw it gain more power, acceleration and an overall electric range. The electric power unit now has the capacity of achieving 373 pound-feet of torque and the ability to reach 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds. The top speed of the previous car was set at 106 mph and the 2017 version will go beyond that but official specs have still not been issued.
The 1.4-liter gas-engine generator allows the ELR to gain 330 miles of range, while an additional 39 miles is added with the electric, emission free powertrain. The T-shaped, 435-pound battery is positioned in the middle of the vehicle just between the front and rear axles in order to provide the best possible weight distribution for the car. The car also receives the returning “Regen on Demand” technology, which was slightly improved and updated for the vehicle now.
2017 Cadillac exterior design and interior changes
Design wise, the 2017 Cadillac ELR is still a good looking vehicle. With an cohesive kind of a design the car is a standout when it comes to looks and this was not changed significantly when comparing it to the previous design of the car. The back side is raised a bit and it has some short overhangs which go front to back. There are some chrome details that go along the flanks as well.
The front part of the car is a bit pointed and sharp, but it is the design of both the headlights and the taillights that really ties together the look of the car. The main difference though is the front grille. The vertical slats that were used to the previous model were substituted with squared-off crest without any circular surrounds.
The interior part of the 2017 Cadillac ELR remains a luxury setting, but it is the technologically advanced additions that make the difference here and give us a contemporary car. So a standard feature in the car is the OnStar and a 4G LTE built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. It supports seven devices being used at once and comes with a free three-month/three-gigabyte trial period.
On the center position there is the 8-inch configurable instrument display which gives the driver the most important vitals about the four main levels that are needed when driving.
Cadillac also added various safety systems to the car with the Driver Assistance active safety systems. All of these were optional equipment on the previous vehicle but now you get them all standard, so you have the use of rear cross-traffic alert, side blind-zone alert, Intellibeam headlights and Lane-change alert .
Some comfort features on the inside are the “cut-and-sew” handcrafted upholstery which are made of Semi-Aniline full leather a “sueded” microfiber headliner. power-assist covered storage/cup holders are placed on the center console and fold-down rear seatbacks which gives you extra room.

Price and release date
The best news about the 2017 Cadillac ELR is that its price is going to be significantly reduced. The previous car was priced at roughly around $76,000, but the newest 2017 is going to receive a cut cost which makes it available at a base MSRP of $58,495. That is something that will interest the fans the most and make it more popular.
The release date is on the other hand still not familiar but we do hope to see the car in action by the start of 2017. Some assumptions place the car already available for sale in the first quarter of next year. The model may not have stern the market as the release of the 2017 Cadillac Escalade or the 2017 Cadillac CT6, but still remains a respectable release from Cady.
