Subaru is already working on the new 2019 Subaru Crosstrek even after recently launching the 2018 model. The Crosstrek is a perfect vehicle for people who loathe the idea of owning an SUV but still find a lifted wagon appealing. The Crosstrek has had its fair share of highs and lows in this rather competitive segment. But judging from recent data, it’s doing comparatively well, in fact very well.
2019 Subaru Crosstrek Release Date & Price
As you can imagine, talking about the release date and price at this point would be too early. But judging from past cycle we should expect the Crosstrek to be released sometime in May 2018 as a 2019 model year car. As for the price, we think Subaru won’t be justified to increase it much from the existing model, as such, buyers should expect to pay about $22K for the most basic version. We’ll update the info as soon as it is made available.
See, the previous model sold slightly over 95,000 units in a segment that boasts of cut throat competition. This number might not mean much if we don’t know what the segment’s total is, but here’s the catch – the Crosstrek is a unique one as it doesn’t have a direct competitor that can go head to head with it on its features. But considering the total sales that were done by the brand – 615,000, then it makes it clearer that the Crosstrek is a treasured model by the marque and therefore constant updates make perfect sense.
According to pictures we’ve had the privilege of seeing, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek seems to have some very minor changes over the recently released one. For one, we should expect additional new colors, slightly shorter overhangs, and refreshed headlights. Much of what the interior will feature remains mysterious.
Also, we should probably see a slight increase in the interior space as well as updated materials and technologies. Last year, engineers and designers borrowed a lot of features from its smaller sibling – the Subaru Impreza.
Alongside the discovery of the new 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, we also stumbled upon news concerning the Subaru Ascent that is set to go for sale sometime in the fall of 2019. Tom Doll, Chief Operating Officer – Subaru America, said the new Ascent should go for sale sometime in 2019 as he estimated production should start by this fall.
Under the hood of the 2019 Ascent will be a 2.4L turbocharged, direct-injection “boxer” engine that will be a first for Subaru. This will represent a big leap for Subaru which currently employs six-cylinder powertrains for its models. The Ascent, unlike the Crosstrek and Impreza, will make use of a modified version of the SGP platform.
Back to the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, the vehicle will still make use of the Subaru Global Platform – the same platform that has underpinned its predecessors. But why is Subaru so reluctant to change the SGP? First, the SGP has only been in use in the market for just a couple of years and therefore Subaru sees no need for its replacement. Second, the platform is as a culmination of technological expertise that Subaru has acquired over the years. Third, the SGP, according to the brand, enhances “enjoyment and peace of mind” – a trademark that Subaru now wants to associate with its brand.
Lastly, the SGP has the following compelling features that are hard to be ignored; top safety value – it enhances safety through responsive steering, better rolling resistance, lighter weight, higher strength, and chassis higher-rigidity. It is fun to drive – offers a responsive handling thanks to improvements in stabilizers, suspension, and chassis rigidity. Also, the SGP makes the cabin comfortable to ride in. unpleasant vibrations are reduced to a minimum.
We advise those living in urban/suburban areas to consider going for the Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3, or the Honda HR-V. All these are capable vehicles that offer a ton more on style and design. The Mazda CX-3 for instance is a petite compact crossover SUV that’s got more going for it. It’s fun to drive, stylish, and easy to park. Moreover, it takes the segment to a whole different level with its fuel economy.
2019 Subaru Crosstrek Interior Review & Exterior Updates
For 2019, we don’t expect Subaru to make significant changes to the Crosstrek save for the subtle ones like additional colors, change in design cues, and headlights/taillights designs and orientations.
Talking of colors, the existing model is available in five colors – Hyper Blue, Desert Khaki, Dark Gray Metallic, Quartz Blue Pearl, and Venetian Red Pearl. Optional ones are Jasmine Green Pearl and Ice Silver Metallic.
The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek interior, thanks to continuous updates on the SGP platform, continues to be outstanding in terms of comfort and ride compliance. For 2019, we expect Subaru to make it even better in terms of material quality, offered technologies, and in terms of overall comfort. We recommend buyers to go for the 2.0i Premium model for obvious reasons.
Under the hood of the new 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is a 2.0L flat-four turbo propeller that makes 152 horsepower and 145 pounds of torque – those who know a thing or two about Subaru will immediately notice that this is the same engine that currently powers the existing model.
Also returning is a six-speed manual gearbox, continuously variable transmission system and the obvious standard all-wheel drive system. We are yet to get the latest news concerning any changes to the mill to this point, as such, we assume that Subaru is still going to offer the same engine as before.
There’re also talks of a hybrid powertrain. But much of that remains to be rumors at this point.
The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is set to continue being a formidable player in this segment of cars thanks to its solid foundation. A foundation that ensures off-the-beaten-path ability, and a comfortable ride quality. So no matter the rate at which rivals are increasing, the Crosstrek is one without a faint heart. Updates will follow in the coming weeks.
