The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban just like its predecessors is expected to score big when it comes to passenger space, cargo capacity, and towing ability. Additionally, most of its users appreciate the car-like maneuverability and comfort levels it offers. Even while we ponder on the likelihood of a future 2019 Suburban, the recent model – the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban will in the meantime continue to grab news for the right reasons.
The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban got a plethora of changes and updates to various categories. A quick look at the most significant changes it got include changes to its color palette that meant deletion of the Champagne Silver Metallic exterior color and in its place came the Satin Steel Metallic exterior color. Addition of Tire Fill Alert, LED running lights, Rally Sport Truck package, and a host of standard and optional features as well.
The Rally Sport Truck package for instance includes the following features; unique body-color surround and gloss black sport grille, black roof rails, black mirror caps, black nameplate badging, body-color headlamp accents, body-color door handles, and 22” gloss black aluminum wheels.
Standard and optional features include addition of steering wheel-mounted audio, replacement of a single-color driver information center, additional LED daytime running lights, a new I05 Chevrolet MyLink Radio, and a new HD radio. Safety features include low speed forward automatic braking, safety alert seat, power-adjustable pedals, IntelliBeam headlamps, and forward collision alert.
Putting the Chevrolet Suburban 2018 aside, we expect the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban to get a few changes and redesigns for the 2019 model year. Some quarters say that the 2019 model could be the last one for the current eleventh Suburban generation but that is yet to be made public by GMC.
Although speculative at the moment, here are our main expectations of the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban: two new exterior colors, additional color combinations for the interior, minor changes to features structure, and an introduction to a brand new infotainment system. The terrain should return unaltered.
Shared with the rest of the family – Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Yukon, GMC Sierra, and Cadillac Escalade is the GMT K2 platform which we expect to continue being used even for the 2019 model.
This monster of a vehicle still returns as a truck-based passenger package unlike most of its peers which have now converted to a car-like platform. Car-like crossover SUVs are generally superior to truck-based ones in terms of drivability, fuel efficiency, and comfort. But at the same time, these vehicles lack the off-road ruggedness that truck-based SUVs offer.
At a length of around 17 feet, the Chevrolet Suburban is the go-to vehicle for anyone who wants to carry a lot of people, carry something heavy or pack a lot of cargo. In a fully-equipped mode, the Suburban should easily tow a maximum of 8,300 pounds thanks to the tough, body-on-frame platform.
2019 Chevrolet Suburban Release Date & Pricing
Based on GM model year rollover sequence, we expect the 2019 Suburban release date to take place sometime in the third quarter of 2018. Pricing is yet to be announced even for the 2018 model so it’d be too early to mention that of the 2019 model year this soon. We however don’t expect the basic model to go past $53K mark.
Interior Changes & Exterior Modifications
As already mentioned above, the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban interior and exterior updates should be confined to just color changes and additional equipment. But the rest should just return almost unchanged. The interior of this Suburban just like its predecessors is expected to be voluptuous. And while the first two rows of seating space deserve applause, the third row space is rather cramped. This is rather disappointing for a mega truck like the Suburban.
In terms of visibility, we find that of the Suburban to be understandably limited thanks to its enormous size but you’d be more surprised on how it still manages to offer it decently. Rear parking sensors and the rearview camera which are all standard features help make parking this sheer-sized vehicle possible.
As a passenger, you’ll certainly get a mix of strong and weak points within the cabin. Cabin noise remains a minimum thanks to sound-deafening materials and as such passengers might love the drive serenity the Suburban delivers. We’d however discourage buyers from getting the 22” wheels which make riding inside the Suburban feel unpleasant over small road imperfections.
Engine Performance & Specs
The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban should still return with the same engine that is now available for the 2018 year model. The 2018 Suburban RST got a 6.2L 420-horsepower V8 engine that takes the reigns from the 5.3L V8 engine that powered the 2017 model and was credited for offering 355 hp and 383 lbs. ft. of torque.
While we await safety results from the IIHS and NHTSA, the 2017 model achieved five out of five stars for side-impact protection, four out of five stars for overall and crash protection, and three stars for rollover protection. The 2018 model received quite a commendable addition to the number of available features and that alone should help it earn better marks in these government crash tests.
Strong competitors that tip toe on the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban sales trail include the Toyota Sequoia and the Ford Expedition. Both of these competitors have their own strong and weak points as pertains ownership and the final verdict should depend on what is really looking for.
The Toyota Sequoia scores strongly in terms of offering a strong and efficient turbocharged V6 engine, towing capacity, interior flexibility, and spacious third row seat. It’s is for this and other reasons that we particularly like the Sequoia. The Ford Expedition also takes most of these strong points and adds its own – a spacious seating for seven people and a ton of towing capacity. Four trims are available to choose from including the bare-bones Expedition XLT model and the top-of-the-range Expedition Platinum model.
