This, 2019 Infiniti QX50, is going to be the most important model for the company in the U.S. They have gone back to the drawing board and produced the model that has nothing to do with the outgoing model. They built the new platform that is dedicated to high efficiency and (at the same time) high performance. How did they do that? Well, they made an original revolutionary engine called Variable-Compression engine.
2019 Infiniti QX50 Variable-Compression Engine
Many companies simply ditched their V-6 in favor of a four-cylinder engine. This is what happened with Infiniti too! They now have a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, however, this engine is not like others. This is the first of its kind.
Engines usually have the fixed compression ratio. However, Nissan decided to make some changes, so their engineers installed a small joint between the crankshaft and connecting rods. That is how Infiniti’s engineers were able to vary the compression between 8.0:1 and 14.0:1. Lower compression means more power, and higher compression means better fuel economy. They claim that the engine uses 7.8 l/100 km (30.15 mpg). The engine is 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that provides 268 hp.
It is a fairly good engine that shows very little turbo lag and if driven aggressively, it provides a satisfactory growl.
The engine has four driving modes: Personal, Eco, Sport, and Standard. It has paddle shifters on the steering wheel so you can completely enjoy the “sports mode”.
2019 Infiniti QX50 Fuel Economy
City/ Highway/ Combined
24/ 31/ 27 – FWD
24/ 30/ 26 – AWD
And if you want a better fuel economy than this, you would have to get a Lexus NS Hybrid.
2019 Infiniti QX50 Transmission System
The transmission system of the 2019 Infiniti QX50 has also been changed. And this is very important for that mpg. They went from a seven-speed to a CVT with eight preset ratios. That is where you choose driving modes. However, Infiniti programmed the transmission to imitate the normal gear-change. That makes the engine rev-up a little bit and drop down to lower RPMs. They could’ve let the CVT “hang out” in a particular RPM. That would certainly be more fuel efficient.
What Does This Mean?
It basically means that you have two options with this vehicle. While other companies usually try to make a vehicle that can hit some kind of a middle ground between the fuel economy and performance, Infiniti offers two-in-one. You can drive “economically” and later switch modes to bring in some performance. If that is your cup of tea.
2019 Infiniti QX50 Exterior
Up front, the 2019 QX50 is instantly recognizable as Infiniti. There is a well-known grille, a large Infiniti logo, full-LED headlights, and LED fog lamps below. It is now 184.8in long, which is 2 inches shorter than the outgoing model, however, it has a bigger cargo space at the back. The new shape of the vehicle actually helps with that one. And they also made a great move by going for the FWD and AWD rather than remaining in that RWD and AWD combo.
At the back, the rear-end styling is definitely the Infiniti, but the lines are a bit crisper. Of course, taillights are mirroring the front with their LED lamps, you have twin exhaust down below, followed with unavoidable parking sensors.
Ground clearance is unexpectedly still relatively high, considering the fact that the rest of the segment is getting lower as the years pass by. The luxury compact crossovers are certainly not going to follow the trend. The 2019 Infiniti QX50 still has 8.6 inches of ground clearance.
2019 Infiniti QX50 Interior
The designers of the 2019 Infiniti QX50 managed to find more room in the interior. The maximum cargo space is now 1,822 liters! And yeah, the engine is so good and fuel efficient, however, the interior is not far behind it. Apart from being really comfortable, the seats (and almost all other surfaces in the cabin) have been done really carefully and can satisfy your taste no matter the trim level. What else can you expect from an “Infiniti”? And plainly speaking, the interior of the 2019 QX50 is maybe the best interior Infiniti has ever done.
The materials and layers used for the rest of the vehicle transfer to the dashboard and at the central part of it, you have two touchscreens. The upper one is the factory-designed default navigation (which doesn’t look that good). You have some control over the climate and infotainment system on that screen. The second screen is bigger and of a better quality. You can control the paired phone, climate, driver assistance (vehicle settings), navigation, etc. That is where you find all the physical controls too.
You can control the options on the navigation screen via the buttons on the steering wheel, screen, or use the control knob just next to the shifter.
The instrument cluster is a partial LCD design. The multifunction display gives us readouts like trip computer, navigation, safety systems, boost pressure, audio system, navigation, etc.
