Although the new Subaru Legacy is often overshadowed by other well-known brands in the segment, it deserves more attention especially if you know what it is capable of. Rivals like the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, and the Honda Accord are typically the ultra-popular and hard-to-argue-with honchos of the midsize sedan segment. For 2017 however, Subaru hopes to tilt the scales to its advantage thanks to the myriad of changes and redesigns that it has offered its Legacy model.

One trait that undoubtedly sets it apart from its main rivals is the excellent all-weather capability that it offers courtesy of the full-time all-wheel drive system. One could however argue that both the Chrysler 200 and the Ford Fusion offer an all-wheel drive as well. What they mightn’t know is that it’s pricier, optional and often paired with a more potent but less-efficient engines. With the Legacy, every trim and engine gets the system without putting the price and fuel efficiency in jeopardy.

Although lacking in sophistication relative to its competition, the new Subaru Legacy stands out from the rest of the crowd with its EyeSight accident avoidance technology that is available across the entire trim lineup except the base model. Unfortunately, several shortcomings tarnish the otherwise illustrious résumé, these include so-so quality and refinement relative to rivals like the Ford Fusion and the Honda Accord. Isn’t as pleasing to drive as the Mazda 6 or the Chevy Malibu. And you might be hard-pressed to offer an explanation to your Camry-driving folks why you decided to go with the Legacy. We nonetheless recommend it unreservedly for people living in the snow-belt regions.

When we come to the exterior, Subaru says no changes are to be expected on all trims except the new Legacy Sport which is an all-new trim model and comes with its own unique styling flourishes and cues. Some of the exterior features available include 17-inch steel wheels (base 2.5i Legacy), automatic headlights, a rearview camera, 18-inch wheels (2.5i Limited), and xenon headlights.

2017 Subaru Legacy Interior

The interior, just like that of its immediate predecessor, is straightforward and simple. There’re more cushioning than before therefore the comfort levels have improved significantly at common touch points such as the center console and the armrests over the previous model. Unlike before, the optional touchscreen navigation system comes with smartphone-line operation, and crisp graphics that are responsive and easy to use.

Interior accommodation is comfortable thanks to spacious leg- and headroom. However, if you’re looking for a car that is sufficiently spacious, we recommend you check out the Ford Fusion and the Honda Accord. The same is also true for the trunk volume. One other thing that makes the Legacy appealing is perhaps its excellent exterior visibility – slightly higher driving position.

Available Trims

For 2017, five trims are offered: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Sport, and the top-of-the-line 3.6R Limited. The numbers connote the engine’s displacement. The Legacy GT and the STI wagon are reviewed elsewhere. Details of a Legacy Hybrid are still categorized as rumors at least for now, more details on the same will be offered on its release date.

Engine Specs

Default systems for both of the two engines offered for the newest Subaru Legacy include a CVT and an AWD system.
