2019 Volkswagen Touareg Review

Our spy photographers were lucky enough to get a glimpse of what the next generation Touareg is going to be. The 2019 Volkswagen Touareg is the model in question and, at first, might be confused to be the new Tiguan thanks to its chunky proportions and blocky lines which makes them difficult to differentiate.

While the camouflage is meant to confuse us, those with a trained eye can clearly make out the differences. What we can immediately tell from the word go is it’s a third generation Touareg, clearly indicated by the prototype’s stature and large size. It sits in between the new three Atlas and the Tiguan, and is a two-row luxury themed vehicle.

Has the platform changed? Good question. The new 2019 Volkswagen Touareg will make use of the new MLB Evo architecture instead of the aging PL52 platform that its predecessors used. The new MLB Evo architecture is the same platform that underpins the latest Audi Q7 model. What this therefore means is that the new 2019 Touareg model’s wheelbase will reduce slightly. Although this is expected to reduce the passenger space somehow, Touareg fans shouldn’t have sleepless nights as the new vehicle won’t make use of third row of seats.

But before we go full length on expounding what the new 2019 Volkswagen Touareg has to offer, probably it would make sense for us to give a short description of what the Volkswagen Touareg is all about. The Volkswagen Touareg is a premium SUV that doesn’t disappoint when it comes to offering a well-refined cabin, luxury and convenience features. It doesn’t come cheap though!

Unlike most of the vehicles it is competing with in this segment, the VW Touareg is probably one that is often overlooked. Overlooked because it lacks the name recognition that other models enjoy. See, the Touareg finds itself in a collision course with the likes of Grand Cherokee Summit, and the Ford Explorer Platinum.

The two rivals – Ford Explorer Platinum and the Grand Cherokee Summit – are just as good as the Touareg and you can actually find they score better on fuel efficiency and engine performance. But hey, the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg and its predecessors by extension provides the sense of refinement that the latter two won’t offer you. Also, the level of safety features it offers is rivalled by none.

And given the level of technology and premium craftsmanship that the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg is expected to offer, it would only be wise to further rope in the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Lincoln MKX, Lexus RX, and the BMW X5 model.

2019 Volkswagen Touareg Price & Release Date

The estimated price and arrival are still in mystery at this point. The USA spec model should however be expected sometime in the fall of 2018 or early 2019 while the EU-spec model should be expected late this year (2017).

As for the price, the new Volkswagen Touareg 2019 will cost more than its larger sibling – the Atlas, but will not cost significantly higher than the current model that retails for around $50K and about $57K for the Touareg Executive model. Specific details will be added once Volkswagen makes them more and more clearer in the coming months. So keep checking!

2019 Volkswagen Touareg Interior & Exterior Review

From the pictures, it is quite evident that the new model has changed its dimensions a tad bit than the outgoing model. It looks more dynamic and bold. But what is the MLB Evo platform? According to online sources, the new platform is a system that brings about a sense of rationality in terms of the way the engine is oriented.

This means that all vehicles that use the MLB platform share the same mounting regardless of the model’s powertrain option – be it electric, hybrid, petrol, diesel, or even natural gas. Apart from engine mounting, the platform also has a significant impact on seating position, overall height, wheelbase, and track width.

The interior, just like that on its predecessor will slot in between the entry level and the top-level ordinary. What however remains a constant is the Volkswagen Touareg’s excellent build quality and extensive use of high quality materials that have been further bolstered by tasteful chrome and wood accents along with intuitive interfaces.

Although lacking in the specifics, the new 2019 Volkswagen Touareg should come with an updated infotainment system as well as additional standard features. According to recent announcements, the wheelbase of the new model has slightly reduced which means that the cabin space has slightly reduced. What we don’t know is the extent to which it has reduced and the possible repercussions emanating from that in terms of passenger space.

Some of the standard features to expect from the entry-level model include LED running lights and taillights, automatic and adaptive bi-xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, automatic emergency braking, heated eight-way power front seats, keyless ignition and entry, a heated tilt-and telescopic steering wheel, an adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system, Bluetooth connectivity, and V-Tex premium vinyl upholstery.

2019 Volkswagen Touareg Engine Performance

The U.S market is expected to have a V6 engine as a standard powertrain beneath the hood. At this point however it remains to be known whether it’ll be Audi’s supercharged 3L V6 used in the Q7 or the aging 3.6L VR6 that is presently on the existing iteration of Touareg. Talking of the 3.6L, the engine currently mills out a whopping 280 horsepower and 265 lbs. ft. of torque for the 2017 model. Both the AWD and eight-speed transmission system are standard. Fuel economy for the Touareg stands at 19 mpg for combined city and highway cruising.

The existing model earned top marks both from the IIHS and the NHTSA. This is a norm for most if not all Volkswagen vehicles given their longstanding history of safety. And while we don’t pay much attention on the outcome of the safety tests, the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg should still continue to impress in this regard.
